The Officer led a Prahar for Op-Sankalp onboard INS Sharda wherein, on 02 Feb 24, his team flawlessly carried out an opposed boarding on hijacked Iranian vessel – FV Omari. The operation led to capture of seven armed pirates, rescue of 19 fishermen and recovery of arms, ammunition, and other piracy enablers. For the anti-piracy mission involving hostage situation, the officer led a quickly assembled team. Though severe resource constrains like lack of second RHIB for cover fire could have marred the operation, he showcased courage and quick decision making to go ahead with the mission. The officer compensated for these limitations through tactical innovativeness, achieving surprise, which caught the pirates off-guard and lead to their surrender. Throughout the mission, he led the team under constant threat of fire from armed pirates and by being the first person to embark the boat, he emulated daringness. The officer also led a comprehensive search of the vessel for IEDs, contrabands, arms and ammunition. The success of the mission can be largely attributed professionalism, courage, and leadership of the Prahar Commander. In recognition of the daringness displayed by him, Lt Cdr Sourabh Malik is strongly recommended for award of NM (Gallantry).
