Indian Navy continued its relentless efforts to locate 10 persons and two vehicles, reportedly washed away into the Gangavali River following a landslide on 16 July 2024 at Shirur, 40 kms south of Karwar. On 17 July 2024, the Navy team, in co-ordination with NDRF successfully hauled out a HPCL LPG tanker ashore from the river after battling strong currents.
The Navy has also localised the probable location of the second vehicle, buried under debris in the river, using the side scan sonar. Persistent river currents of over six knots have precluded safe diving operations for salvage this far.
The Indian Navy team WNC, comprising 12 divers and 6 Hydrography experts is assisting the local administration in these efforts in coordination with Indian Army, NDRF and other agencies.
