Commissioning of Fifth Kalvari Class Submarine ‘Vagir’ at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai

Indian Navy’s fifth stealth Scorpene class Submarine INS Vagir was commissioned into Indian Navy on 23 January 2023 at Naval Dockyard Mumbai in presence of Admiral R Hari Kumar CNS, the Chief Guest for ceremony. INS Vagir will form part of WNC Submarine fleet. Vagir was launched on 12 November 2020, under Project 75 (P75) and was delivered to Indian Navy on 20 December 2022 post completion of sea trials. Vagir has the distinction of having lowest build time among all Indigenously manufactured submarines till date. Vice Admiral AB Singh CINC WNC , Chairman and Managing Director, MDL and other senior civil and military officials of Ministry of Defence were present during commissioning ceremony. The crew of erstwhile ‘Vagir’, a Russian origin Foxtrot Class Submarine which was decommissioned in 2001 were special invitees for ceremony. The commissioning Commanding Officer Rear Admiral K Raja Menon (Retd) was also present. The Scorpene Submarines are extremely potent platforms, they have advanced stealth features and are equipped with both, long range guided torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles. These submarine have a state of the art Sonar suite and sensor suite permitting outstanding Operational capabilities.
