WMO Day 2023 Celebrated at Mumbai by HQWNNC

On the occasion of World Meteorological Organisation Day 2023, WNC conducted a symposium on 24 March 2023. The event was inaugurated by Rear Admiral Kunal Rajkumar, CSO (Ops), WNC, in presence of Mr. SG Kamble, Scientist F, Director I/C RMC Mumbai, other eminent scientists from IMD Mumbai Chapter and meteorological veterans. Speaking on occasion, CSO(Ops) highlighted the importance of weather in planning and execution of naval operations. He pointed out that India’s meteorological scientific pool is world class and emphasised need for close synergy among all institutions to enhance effectiveness in field. Informative lectures were delivered by eminent meteorologists that included topics such as “Effect of Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly on Indian Summer Monsoon” and “Nowcasting using DWR and Satellite imagery during Southwest Monsoon Season”. To spread awareness on meteorology and climate change, activities such as poster and painting competitions, essay writing and talks by eminent scientists were conducted for naval personnel and school children by Meteorological Office of Headquarters, WNC, Mumbai. Prizes were distributed to winners of all competitions to encourage people towards environmental protection and sustainability. WMO Day is observed every year on 23 March to commemorate establishing of WMO on this date in 1950. The yearly themes chosen normally for WMO Day reflect topical weather, climate or water-related issues. This year's theme, “The future of weather, climate, and water across generations”, was chosen to motivate us to discharge our responsibilities so as to ensure that further generations inherit a better tomorrow.
