World Environment Day celebration by INS Garuda

INS Garuda celebrated World Environment Day23 with a series of events and activities to raise awareness about environmental protection and climate change. The unit has contributed significantly in promoting GoI Mission LiFE theme of WED-23 i.e. Beat Plastic Pollution and creating awareness about living in harmony with nature. 900 service personnel, 120 defence civilians of INS Garuda and their family members undertook pledge under Mission LiFE to live a sustainable lifestyle. To promote awareness, a mass lecture was organised on importance of environmental protection and climate change for 500 personnel. Articles and videos related to protection of environment and actions under mission LiFE were promoted. A 10km cycle rally was organised in Willingdon Island wherein participants carried recycled placards with 75 LiFE actions inscribed urging citizens to adopt sustainable practices and distributed plant saplings. A poster making competition with theme - 6R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, Rot, Rethink) for sustainable future and 'Beat Plastic Pollution' theme was also organised. A relay shramdan, commencing from 0630h to 1030h was conducted inside air station. The unit also contributed towards cleaning of Venduruthy Channel on 03 Jun 2023 and coastal cleanship at Puthuvype Beach today. A tree plantation drive was undertaken by officers and sailors of unit. In addition, a community interaction and awareness programme was conducted in which over 3200 saplings were distributed with help of Kerala Forest Department to eight Gram Panchayats of nearby villages.
