Homage to the pioneer of the Submarine Arm of the Indian Navy: Commodore KS Subramanian, Vsm (Retd)

Commodore KS Subramanian (Retd), a revered figure in Indian Navy breath his last on 05 Jun 2023 in Coimbatore at the age of 94. He was commissioned in Indian Navy on 1 September 1951. Commodore Subramanian's career spanned over three decades and left an indelible mark on Indian Navy and especially in Submarine Arm. One of his notable achievements was his command of Indian Navy's first submarine, INS Kalvari S23, a Foxtrot-class boat. On 8 December 1967, INS Kalvari was commissioned at Soviet naval base in Riga, Latvia. Accompanied by three naval officers from Chennai, this trailblazing team undertook remarkable task of delivering India's commissioned submarine from St. Petersburg to Vizag in 79 days. This significant milestone marked birth of Indian Navy's submarine arm, and Commodore Subramanian played a pivotal role in its establishment. During his career, he held various positions, including Director of Tactical School and Commanding Officer of INS Virbahu and INS Amba. He additionally served as captain of 8th and 9th Submarine Squadrons of Indian Navy. Commodore Subramanian also held esteemed position of COS of SNC before retiring from service in 1978. A funeral ceremony of revered veteran was held on 09 Jun 2023 at Coimbatore. Indian Navy laid wreath and paid their homage to Commodore Subramanian. The last rites ceremony was attended by many serving and retired senior officers from Indian Navy and other services.
